Outlook is the one Office app people most often want on its own, and the one Microsoft makes hardest to buy that way. Search for it and you are steered to Microsoft 365, or to Office Home and Business, which bundles four apps you may not want.
A standalone perpetual Outlook license does exist. This guide covers what it costs, how it works on a Mac, and when buying it alone beats buying the suite. Prices were checked against our live catalog on 1 October 2026.
Can You Buy Outlook on Its Own?
Yes. Outlook 2024 is $59.99 as a one-time purchase at Indigo Software, for one PC or one Mac. Microsoft lists the standalone app at $179.99. There is no subscription, no renewal date and no expiry.
It is the full desktop Outlook client, not the free web version and not the lightweight Mail app. You get mail, calendar, contacts, tasks, rules, categories and offline access to a local copy of your mailbox.
Outlook 2024 Pricing Against the Alternatives
| Option | What you get | Cost | Stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outlook 2024 standalone | Outlook only, 1 PC or Mac | $59.99 once | In stock |
| Office 2024 Home | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote. No Outlook | $178.99 once | In stock |
| Office 2024 Home plus Outlook 2024 | All five apps, two license keys | $238.98 once | In stock |
| Office 2024 Home and Business | All five apps, one license key | $239.99 once | Out of stock |
| Microsoft 365 Personal | Everything, plus Copilot and 1 TB storage | $99.99 per year | n/a |
Two things are worth pulling out of that table. First, standalone Outlook at $59.99 is cheaper than eight months of a Microsoft 365 subscription, and it never stops working. Second, Office 2024 Home and Business is currently out of stock with no confirmed restock date, so if you want all five apps today the Home plus Outlook pair is the route that is actually available, and it costs $1.01 less.
Our comparison of Office 2024 Home against Home and Business works through that substitution in detail, including the discount code that brings the pair down further.
Outlook on a Mac: What You Can and Cannot Get
This is where most of the confusion sits, so it is worth being precise. There are three different things called Outlook on a Mac, and only one of them is a perpetual license you buy.
1. Outlook 2024 for Mac, a perpetual license
This is what we sell at $59.99. It installs on one Mac, it is yours permanently, and it is the full classic desktop client. The requirement is macOS 13 Ventura or later. Check yours under the Apple menu, then About This Mac.
2. The free Outlook for Mac
Microsoft made a free tier of Outlook for Mac available for personal email accounts. It works, and for a single Gmail or iCloud address it may be all you need. What it does not do is handle an Exchange or Microsoft 365 work mailbox properly, and it carries advertising in some configurations. It is not a substitute for a licensed client in a business.
3. Outlook on the web
Free in any browser with a Microsoft account. No installation, no license, and no offline access. Fine as a backup, frustrating as a daily driver if you live in your calendar.
If you have already bought and just want to get it working, our beginner’s guide to the new Outlook for Mac walks through first-run setup, and the guide to the new Outlook on Windows covers the equivalent on a PC.
Older Macs
If your Mac cannot reach macOS 13, Outlook 2024 will not install. Office Home and Business 2021 for Mac at $124.99 runs on earlier macOS releases and includes Outlook, but it reaches end of support on 13 October 2026. Our note on Office 2021 end of support explains why that makes it a short-term answer rather than a purchase to plan around.
Classic Outlook or New Outlook?
Microsoft is moving everyone toward a rebuilt Outlook, and the two versions are not equivalent yet. This matters before you buy.
| Classic Outlook | New Outlook | |
|---|---|---|
| Included with a perpetual license | Yes | Yes, both ship |
| Full VBA and macro support | Yes | No |
| COM add-ins | Yes | Limited |
| PST file support | Yes | Limited |
| Offline access | Yes | Yes |
| Shared and delegated mailboxes | Yes | Improving, still gaps |
If you depend on macros, COM add-ins or PST archives, stay on classic. A perpetual Outlook 2024 license includes both and lets you move between them with a toggle in the top corner, so buying it does not force the decision on you.
When Standalone Outlook Is the Right Buy
Buy Outlook alone if
- You already have Word and Excel from an earlier Office version and only need to add email.
- You run a business email account and want mail, calendar and contacts in one desktop app rather than a browser tab.
- You already bought Office 2024 Home and then discovered it has no Outlook. This is the most common reason people land here.
- You work offline regularly and need a full local copy of your mailbox.
- You manage several mailboxes at once, such as a personal address and a shared info@ address.
Buy the suite instead if
- You need three or more Office apps. At that point Office 2024 Home plus Outlook at $238.98 beats buying four apps individually at $299.96.
- You are setting up a new machine from scratch with nothing installed.
Take the subscription instead if
- You specifically want Copilot, which no perpetual license includes.
- You need the same mailbox client on a phone, a laptop and a desktop under one license.
- You want the 1 TB of OneDrive storage bundled in.
What a Standalone License Does Not Include
Worth stating plainly, because these are the things buyers assume are included.
| Not included | Detail |
|---|---|
| An email account | Outlook is a client, not a mailbox. You still need email from a provider, whether that is Gmail, iCloud, your host or Microsoft 365. |
| Exchange Server | Connecting to a company Exchange server needs that server licensed separately. |
| Copilot | Subscription only. No perpetual Office license includes it. |
| Cloud storage | No OneDrive allocation. |
| New features | Security and stability updates only. The feature set is locked at the 2024 release. |
| More than one device | One license, one PC or one Mac. |
On that first row: if you need to run your own mail server rather than use a provider, that is a different purchase entirely. Our guide to Microsoft Exchange Server for businesses covers what that involves.
After You Buy
Delivery is by email, normally within minutes, with the genuine Microsoft activation key, the official download link and written instructions.
- Sign in to or create a Microsoft account.
- Redeem the product key against that account.
- Download the installer from the official Microsoft page in your email.
- Run it and sign in to activate.
- Add your email account in Outlook. Most providers are detected from the address alone.
Keep the key somewhere you will find it again. If you have lost a key from a previous purchase, our guide on recovering a lost Microsoft product key covers the five places it is usually still retrievable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy Microsoft Outlook on its own?
Yes. Outlook 2024 is sold as a standalone perpetual license for one PC or one Mac. It is $59.99 at Indigo Software against a $179.99 Microsoft list price, with no subscription and no renewal.
How much does Outlook cost?
Standalone Outlook 2024 is $59.99 as a one-time purchase at Indigo Software. Microsoft lists the standalone app at $179.99. Microsoft 365 Personal, which includes Outlook plus every other app, is $99.99 a year on a subscription.
Does Outlook 2024 work on a Mac?
Yes, on macOS 13 Ventura or later. The same license covers Mac or Windows, but one license installs on one platform on one device. Macs that cannot run Ventura need Office Home and Business 2021 for Mac instead, which loses support on 13 October 2026.
Is Outlook for Mac free?
There is a free tier of Outlook for Mac for personal email accounts, and Outlook on the web is free in any browser. Neither handles an Exchange or Microsoft 365 work mailbox properly, and the free Mac app carries advertising in some configurations. A licensed copy is the business answer.
Does Office 2024 Home include Outlook?
No. Office 2024 Home has Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote only. Outlook comes with Office 2024 Home and Business, which is currently out of stock, or you can add standalone Outlook 2024 to Office 2024 Home for $59.99 and get the same five apps for $238.98.
Do I get an email address with Outlook?
No. Outlook is an email client, not an email service. You still need a mailbox from a provider, whether that is Gmail, iCloud, your web host or Microsoft 365. Outlook connects to accounts you already have.
Does standalone Outlook support macros and add-ins?
Classic Outlook does, with full VBA and COM add-in support. New Outlook does not yet. A perpetual Outlook 2024 license includes both and lets you switch between them with a toggle, so buy with confidence if you depend on macros and stay on classic.
Does a standalone Outlook license expire?
No. It is perpetual, with no expiry and no renewal. What eventually ends is Microsoft’s support for that version, which stops security updates but does not stop the software working.
Can I install Outlook 2024 on two computers?
No. One license covers one PC or one Mac and is tied to that machine after activation. A laptop and a desktop need two licenses, or a Microsoft 365 subscription, which allows multi-device installs.
Need other apps on their own too? Our guide on buying Excel without Microsoft 365 lists prices for every standalone Office app and shows the point where the suite becomes cheaper, and Microsoft 365 against Office 2024 compares paying once with paying every year.
