Windows 7 left Microsoft support on 14 January 2020, and the paid Extended Security Updates program ended in January 2023. There are no more security patches and there will not be any. We sell it, and we are going to be straight with you about what that means.
A Windows 7 machine on the internet is a genuine risk, not a theoretical one. If this PC browses the web or reads email, buy a supported operating system instead. Windows 11 Pro is $69.99 and Windows 11 Home is $59.99, both cheaper than this DVD.
When buying Windows 7 is the right call
There are real reasons, and they are all variations on the same theme: something else on that machine will not run on anything newer.
- Industrial and laboratory equipment. A CNC machine, a test rig or a medical instrument whose control software was certified against Windows 7 and never updated.
- Legacy line-of-business software whose vendor has gone out of business or never shipped a modern build.
- An air-gapped machine that never touches a network.
- Rebuilding a failed PC that has to match an existing estate exactly.
- Older hardware with no Windows 10 or 11 drivers, which is common for scanners, plotters and capture cards.
If one of those describes your situation, keep the machine off the internet or on an isolated network segment, and do not use it for email or browsing.
Why the DVD rather than the download
We sell the same license as an instant download for less. The DVD exists for one specific situation, and it is worth being clear about which you need.
| This DVD, $79.99 | Instant download, $39.99 | |
|---|---|---|
| License | Identical | Identical |
| Delivery | 2 day USPS Priority, tracked, USA only | Email, usually within the hour |
| Bootable installer included | Yes | You create your own from the Microsoft image |
| Works on a PC with no working OS | Yes | Only if you have a second PC to make the USB |
| Best for | A dead machine, or no second computer available | A working PC, or you can make bootable media |
Buy the DVD when the target machine has no working operating system and you have no second computer to build installation media with. In every other case the instant download at $39.99 is the cheaper and faster choice.
