Datacenter or Standard? Read this before you buy

Datacenter and Standard are the same operating system. The difference is virtualization rights and a small number of storage and networking features. Datacenter gives you unlimited Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed host. Standard gives you two. Datacenter also unlocks Storage Spaces Direct and Software Defined Networking, which Standard does not have at all.

So the question is simple. If you run more than two virtual machines on this host, or you need Storage Spaces Direct, Datacenter is the right license and it works out cheaper than stacking Standard licenses. If you run one or two VMs and do not need those two features, Windows Server 2019 Standard costs considerably less and does the same job. We would rather you bought the cheaper one and came back to us than overpaid once.

Cores and CALs

The 32 core license covers a host with up to 32 physical cores. Count cores, not processors, and note that Microsoft requires a minimum of 16 cores per server and 8 per processor regardless of the physical hardware. The 100 User CALs included cover 100 named people, and User CALs travel with the person across all their devices. If you have more devices than people, Device CALs are usually cheaper and we can swap them.
